State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz recognized the significant role Catholic schools play in educating tens of thousands of Michigan students with a resolution declaring Jan. 28 through Feb. 3 as Catholic Schools Week in the state.
Michigan is home to more than 200 Catholic elementary and high schools attended by nearly 50,000 students.
“Catholic schools provide a comprehensive, values-based education that focuses on the lifelong cultivation of moral, intellectual, and social values,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “By instilling a sense of responsibility in young minds, these institutions play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens for our state and nation.”
Locally, Schmaltz said St. John Catholic School is marking its 150th school year in Jackson and Lumen Christi High School won its 13th state football championship.
“We have wonderful Catholic schools in Michigan,” Schmaltz said. “Through their dedication to high academic standards, impressive graduation rates, and commitment to service, our local Catholic schools and their students make an undeniably positive contribution to our community. It’s an honor to get to recognize these schools and the teachers, volunteers, and administrators who work on behalf of our kids.”
