State Reps. Jaime Greene and Veronica Paiz today attended the 85th annual American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Michigan Girls State.

“This event represents the best of leadership development for young women in the state of Michigan,” said Greene (R-Richmond). “As the only female veteran serving in the Michigan Legislature, I know what it means to live a life dedicated to service. I was proud to speak to the next generation of community leaders. This event fosters civic responsibility, critical thinking, and commitment to public service. The skills that they learn here will stay with them throughout their lives. With this experience, these girls will become lifelong advocates for community engagement.”

The ALA Girls State event is a weeklong experiential learning program where high school students build and run a mock state government. The immersive program is designed to teach young women about the democratic process, leadership, patriotism, and responsible citizenship.

“It was an honor to serve as a speaker at Michigan Girls State and meet so many bright, driven young women who are passionate about public service,” said Paiz (D-Harper Woods). “I am the only Latina serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, I know firsthand the importance of representation, mentorship, and seeing yourself reflected in positions of leadership. I hope the young women I met leave this experience inspired to stay engaged in their communities, pursue leadership opportunities, and use their voices to help shape a stronger future for Michigan. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is essential to fostering the next generation of civic leaders.”

The program is running June 14 – 20 at Michigan State University.
