HB 4287: Exempts certain broadband grants received from the state or federal government from state income taxes.
Sponsor: Rep. Bohnak (R)
Passage: 97-8 with Immediate Effect
Why I voted YES: Income taxes collected on grant awards are windfalls for the state – these are not factored into budget calculations when determining revenue and are essentially bonus dollars, so this shouldn’t have a significant budget impact.
– – –
HB 4203: Amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to exempt tow trucks from seasonal road restrictions, loading maximums, and gross vehicle weight requirements when removing a vehicle involved in an accident, impounded, or disabled, from a restricted road.
Sponsor: Rep. Johnsen (R)

HB 4344 Passage: 103-2 with Immediate Effect

HJR 113: Resolution to send the Senate Budget Proposal back to their chamber to fix.
Sponsor: Rep. Maddock (R)
Resolution Adopted: 58-48
Why I voted YES: The Democrats controlling the Senate have produced a budget proposal that is unlawful, unbalanced, and would fail our residents. I won’t stand for this. We simply cannot build a budget on shaky math and false promises. That’s why we’re demanding Senate Democrats go back to the drawing board and produce something realistic and responsible. I voted in support of House Resolution 113 to call on the Michigan Senate to recall their budget bills and fix them. I respect your tax dollars too much to botch the state’s spending plan.

HJR 117: Resolution to hold Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in contempt of the House for ignoring a subpoena request for unredacted election training materials.
Sponsor: Rep. DeBoyer (R)
Resolution Adopted: 58-47
Why I voted YES: Holding an elected official in contempt is not something to celebrate. It’s a disappointing day when our elected leaders do not live up to the standard expected of them. Secretary Benson has not even tried to live up to that standard. She’s spit in the face of transparency, illegally operated our elections, and intentionally hid from the public. She must answer for her failure. It is the Constitutional duty of the legislature to oversee the Secretary of State, to ensure that she is properly conducting Michigan elections. It’s not that we WANT to do it – it’s that we are DUTY BOUND to do it.

Sponsor: Rep. Bierlein (R)

Why I voted YES: In facilitating licensure of physical therapists from other states, the compact would improve patient access and help providers to resolve their therapy needs.

BILL PACKAGE HBs 4066 & 4469: These bills require school boards to designate sports teams by the sex of participants and prohibit males from participating in sports designated for females and provide protection in the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act for schools to base an individual’s eligibility to participate in athletics on the individual’s biological sex.
Sponsors: Reps. Woolford (R) & Linting (R)
HB 4066 Passage: 58-46 with Immediate Effect
HB 4469 Passage: 59-45 with Immediate Effect
Why I voted YES: This legislation protects the integrity of women’s sports. Allowing biological men to participate in women’s sports is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports.
